Flower Light Exhibition: our Artist in Residence Anne McKenzie to fill the Apple House with flowers this April
Monday 2 February 2026

‘Gardens can provide a meeting place for our innermost dream-infused selves and the real world’ — Sue Stuart Smith

The Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health is delighted to announce an exhibition of works by our inaugural Artist In Residence–Anne McKenzie: Flower Light this April, with public viewings on 10 & 17 April and special events including T'ai Chi for Beginners. A London-based painter, Anne creates botanical banners using pigments bound with honey and gum arabic on handmade Japanese paper. Her work is a calligraphic exploration of natural forms, including plants, trees and flowers.

Spanning dream and real worlds, Flower Light presents a visual response to the Plant Library, exploring gardens as spaces where inspiration and experience intertwine. Flower Light is the inaugural art exhibition in the Apple House, an installation of the work by our Artist in Residence, Anne McKenzie.

Rooted in the ethos of the Serge Hill Project, the exhibition celebrates the powerful connections between people, plants, and creativity. Over the course of a year, Anne McKenzie has brushed work on site, capturing the ever-changing seasons and flora within the Plant Library, a living catalogue of over 2000 varieties of plants. On display alongside Anne’s work you’ll see banners created during community workshops—expressions of shared making, collective care, and creative exchange.

The exhibition will also be the inspiration for two Spring Sing! workshops with schools, where local schoolchildren will compose and perform songs inspired by the flowers in the Apple House and Plant Library. During the exhibition there will also be an immersive nature-inspired concert performed by pianist Annie Yim and inspired by Sue Stuart-Smith's The Well Gardened Mind on Saturday 25 April, with more details to be announced.

Anne’s banners will be available to purchase, with proceeds supporting the ongoing work of the Serge Hill Project.

Flower Light events include T’ai Chi for Beginners on Tuesday 14 April and Exhibition Public Viewings on Friday 10 April and Friday 17 April 2026.
